(1) What do PM Harper and Defence Minister MacKay think they are accomplishing with their mock bellicosity toward the Russians?
(2) Why were the Canadian media virtually the only ones to report on this side of the world a dangerous vaccine mishap that is said to have occurred in the Czech Republic?
A Tu-95 Bear strategic bomber and missile carrier (pictured at the right) reportedly flew close to Canadian airspace last week, and even though nobody thought the incident noteworthy at the time it happened, almost a week later it has suddenly become a big deal, thanks to ridiculous posturing on the part of both our Prime Minister and Defence Minister. To hear them carrying on and to read only the headlines, you would think Canada came to within an inch of being bombed by the Ruskies.
The Canadian Press started it all by screeching "From Russia with bombs"(they have since "updated" and removed that headline) and making a lame attempt to tie the incident to Obama's visit to Ottawa, but buried in the middle of their report is this mitigating reality:
Pilots tend to consider the intercepts a symbol of status rather than of hostile action, often exchanging smiles while taking photographs and video at 30,000 feet or so.To look at Steve and Petie with those broom sticks propping them up, you wouldn't take them for hysterical types, would you? So what's their game? What are they setting us up for?
"Russian long-range activity is part of their training exercises and so we do see this," said Canadian navy Lt. Desmond James, a spokesman at Norad headquarters in Colorado Springs, Colo. "We don't treat it as a hostile intent as much as a training exercise.
Reuters: Harper concerned by "aggressive" Russia
For all his wooden manequin qualities, it's surprising how Harper loves the word "deep". He is deeply saddened at the loss of cannon fodder, and he has a deep concern about the Russians.
The word, needless to say, has lost all meaning. No kidding, I looked it up in the dictionary and it's been crossed out.
Thanks to the New York Daily News the word "infringe" may become a junk word as well. There was a time when you wouldn't have got past an editor if you said in the same report that the plane "infringed on Canada's airspace" and "never crossed into Canadian airspace".
The same rag quotes Petie as saying the Russians did this "during" Obama's visit - "on Feb. 16". If they had any brains or ethics, they'd be embarrassed.
For the record: it happened on February 18; Obama arrived on the 19th. And it took almost a week for Petie and Steve to see, or be made to see, some political advantage in it.
UPDATE:
Ria Novista: Russia slams as farce Canada's statement on Tu-160 flight=========================
22:02 | 27/ 02/ 2009
MOSCOW, February 27 (RIA Novosti) - A Russian government source expressed astonishment on Friday over a statement made by Canada's defense minister over a flight by a Russian strategic bomber near the Canadian border.
Peter Mackay said two Canadian fighters forced the Russian Tu-160 Blackjack to make a U-turn on February 18 as it neared Canadian airspace less then 24 hours before U.S. President Barack Obama was due to visit Ottawa. The Canadian minister said the move was "a strong coincidence."
"The Canadian defense minister's statements concerning the flights of our long-haul aircraft are totally unclear... This was a routine flight. The countries adjacent to the flight path had been notified and the planes did not violate the airspace of other countries. In this light the statements by the Canadian Defense Ministry provoke astonishment and can only be called a farce," the source said.
The Russian Defense Ministry spokesman, Col. Alexander Drobyshevsky, confirmed that all the neighboring states had received prior notification of the flights by Russian strategic aircraft.
Lt. Col. Vladimir Drik, a Russian Air Force spokesman, said earlier the Tu-160 flights were in compliance with international agreements and rules and did not violate Canadian airspace.
CTV: How were bird flu viruses sent to unsuspecting labs?
A standard flu vaccine, laced (accidentally?) with avian flu virus, was shipped by Baxter International, a U.S. headquartered multinational "health" corporation, to a research facility in Austria.
Lucky for me, I was able to turn the report over to a biologist friend in Europe, so most of the research and writing has been done for me (thanks!):
The Canadian Press is now reporting that Baxter has admitted to making a mistake, and the WHO "is closely monitoring the investigation into the events that took place at Baxter International's research facility in Orth-Donau, Austria."I did a search covering the previous month in Spanish, Catalan, Austrian, German and Czech pages and this is what I found. The last was in Czech and I had the first part translated because I wanted to be sure that the English versions resembled the Czech language version.
- Several Czechs threatened with bird flu - press
- No one infected with bird flu virus in vaccine tested in CzechRep
- "Lethal avian flu finds itself in the Czech Republic and only thanks to luck as it do not destroy people. The bioassay in Konarovice vaccine tested in the Kolín Austrian pharmaceutical company Baxter, which it develops. However, the vaccine contained the aggressive bird flu virus H5N1."
No news in Spain so I can't imagine why Canada picked it up. Does seem like a scare, really.
More surprisingly, I looked up WHO news and there seems to be no mention of the incident - not that I can find. You'd think that if there were any possiblity of a pandemic starting it would have been mentioned in the WHO news.
I looked up the European Centre for disease control and although their latest headline is Feb 16, there is no mention of the incident on their front page, nor in their press release section.
I honestly can't tell who this news is really for - it covers a lot of themes, doesn't it?
- If there is an outbreak this way - it is not an NWO "conspiracy plot" it is either clinical error or a bad company covering up sabotage or stupidity.
- thank goodness nothing happened and the company has taken pains to clean up the mess.
- watch out folks, big brother can unleash a pandemic anytime he wants to.
- avian flu can so easily mutate and become deadly to humans, I'd better not risk it and get vaccinated.
Here's the really salient section of the Canadian Press article:
Accidental release of a mixture of live H5N1 and H3N2 viruses could have resulted in dire consequences. While H5N1 doesn't easily infect people, H3N2 viruses do. If someone exposed to a mixture of the two had been simultaneously infected with both strains, he or she could have served as an incubator for a hybrid virus able to transmit easily to and among people. That mixing process, called reassortment, is one of two ways pandemic viruses are created. It's interesting that, while government and its agents can always cite "national security" when they want to hide something, corporations are able to cite protection of "proprietary information" when necessary to wiggle out of a tight spot. And that's exactly what Baxter is doing in this case.
I quite frankly don't know if the Canadian media should be thanked for bringing the hidden to light, or rapped for creating yet another badly explained scare that will drive balky Canadians to get jabbed and create further profits for big pharm.
Since there is all this experimental flu vaccine floating around, it's not hard to image that the bird flu incidents are artificially created with the aim of destroying smaller businesses and driving up the prices of the remaining saleable birds produced by massive factory farms.
But with all this talk, it may well also be possible that the passing of avian flu among humans will not be the result of mutation but of deliberate manufacture - under the guise of flu prevention - as a means of population reduction. And maybe the real accident is that the concoction got into intelligent, ethical hands.
A few more "mishaps" and maybe the day will come when people will be less afraid of the disease than they are of taking a chance on the prevention and/or cure. Or maybe that's just wishful thinking on my part.
