Chapters Boycott defies Old Man Winter

The Ottawa boycott of the Chapters Bookstore at Rideau and Sussex Streets is still grooving along.

Admittedly, there wasn't the usual large turnout this time due to the fact that the white stuff just would not stop falling and some residential neighbourhoods had not yet been ploughed (including my own).

But those who did brave the weather were a hardy, upbeat lot. There was music, thanks to the Raging Grannies and singer Larry Rousseau, and there was even dancing in the street.

My temperature sensitive camera refused to work several times, but I managed to get two decent photos. (See below)

The shopper reaction was mixed as always, but it seemed to me we received twice as many enthusiastic words of encouragement as angry ones, and it also seemed that more than the usual number of passersby already had some awareness of what is going on with regard to Israel/Palestine, and were ready to learn more. So the message is definitely getting out to the people.

Several times, shoppers who had used the back entrance to the store saw us through the front windows (and heard Lia shouting "End Israeli Apartheid" every time the door opened so as to be heard inside) and they actually took the trouble to come to the front door and reach out their hands for a pamphlet!

An interested passerby who didn't mind being photographed with snow-bedecked organizer Ben Saifer.

The Ottawa Chapters picket is organized by NION-Ottawa with support from Canpalnet-Ottawa

A message from NION:

OPPOSE ISRAEL'S WARS

As a group of Jews who are vehemently opposed to the atrocities being carried out in our name, we urge you to join us in standing in solidarity with our Palestinian brothers and sisters. We urge you to join NION Ottawa in opposing Chapters' support of the occupation through the Heseg Foundation.
